So yesterday Darius wanted to go to the MainPlace Mall. We were walking around and looking at stores and then we walked by this store called "NOTW". For any of you that don't know what store I'm talking about, those letters stand for "Not Of This World" which is a store for Jesus. I had seen some interesting (interesting meaning funny) keychains at a Christian bookstore that I had gone into a while back when I was waiting for my ride to pick me up. I walked into the store so I could see if they had the same keychains and I could show them to Darius. I didn't see any keychains but then the girl who was working the counter walked over to me and asked if I needed help finding an ything. This was what I like to call "an open invitation for disaster". I politely said "no thanks, but I had a question." And she looked at me eagerly and then I said, "do you have to be religious to work here?" She was completely dumbfounded and managed to stutter out "umm I don't really know, you'd have to talk to the manager about that. You can ask the shift leader if you want." I just said "oh no thanks I was just wondering." I started to walk away as Darius came over to me. He asked me what I had been talking about and I told him he didn't want to know. He asked me again so I told him, he couldn't believe I had said that. Then the next thing you know, I got tattled on! It seems the counter girl went and got the shift leader and told him what I had asked. He approaches us and asks if he can help me with anything. I told him "no, i just asked her if you had to be religious to work here." Then he says, "no, you don't have to be religious to work here. I'm not religious. I think that religion is man made. But you do have to believe in Jesus. Religion sorta goes against our motto 'not of this world' we think that you only have to believe in Jesus because religion is something in this world." I was just like "oh ok thanks" and we turn to leave. Then the dude goes "is there anything we can pray for you about today?" Again I'm like "no thank you." And we're walking out and he's like "God bless you guys". I'm surprised Darius and I made it out alive. He couldn't believe that I had actually asked them that question. I couldn't help it. Do you think it is fair to not hire someone because of their religion? And was it ok to require a religion because this was a religious store? Inquiring minds want to know. One thing I have been thinking about since is what I should have asked them to pray about for me. I could have made up a fabulous story about something. Dammit I wish I had thought of something at that very moment and spit it out! Something like "Can you pray for my unborn child? ::pat my tummy:: We're not married ::motion between Darius and myself:: and he's a Satanist. ::point at Darius:: Can you pray that I happy and healthy baby, thanks!" ::bolt out of the store::
